Non-Alcoholic Ginger Lemongrass Margarita
Sometimes you just want a fun cocktail but without the alcohol. A mocktail can happen for a variety of reasons: Dry January, taking medication, avoiding a hangover, or you simply just don't want the booze. Whatever your reason is, you deserve more than the standard seltzer and a lime or a virgin strawberry daiquiri.
A newer addition to our home bar are non-alcoholic distilled spirits. These are distilled with interesting aromatics with the result being tasty spirits with all the flavor, but not the booze.
I’ve been having fun making classic cocktails with these non-alcoholic spirits and recently created the Social Mixers take on a virgin margarita. It keeps the traditional flavors of lime and orange but spices it up with our Ginger Lemongrass Syrup. Seedlip Grove 42 replaces the tequila, resulting in a bright, festive drink that you can enjoy at any time!
Non-Alcoholic Margarita Recipe
Non-Alcoholic Spirit: There are a number of these hitting the market, with most intended to be a sub for gin or whiskey. While it isn't a sub for tequila, I like using Seedlip Grove 42. It's bright and citrusy and with a touch of ginger. It can also be ordered online or found in liquor stores.
Fresh Lime: Fresh lime really makes the drink but use the bottle stuff if you absolute must. There may be a bitter quality from bottled lime.
Syrup: Our Ginger Lemongrass Syrup brings a touch of spice and a whole lotta bright to the drink.
Fresh Orange Orange Juice: This is the replacement for triple sec. While fresh is always best, if you have a jug of OJ in your fridge, I'm not gonna judge.
TOOLS + TECHNIQUES
SALT RIM: Pour a shallow layer of margarita or kosher salt into a saucer. Take a wedge of lime, cut a small slit and then rub it along half of the rim of a rocks glass. Roll this same half of the glass over the salt. I don't like to press the top of the glass into the glass because I've found that it makes the drink overly salty.
USE A SHAKER: As with most citrus drinks, you want to shake your drink as opposed to stirring it. This will better combine the ingredients, chill the drink, and slightly aerate your mocktail.
STRAIN: Use a double-strain method by using both a hawthorne and mesh strainer.
This is an easy recipe to batch for a party! Just multiply the ingredients by the number of desired servings and serve in a pitcher. You can even let folks salt and garnish their own glasses so they can personalize it a bit.
